Two electrical engineers turned Vo-Tech teachers whose classrooms are side-by-side and share a passion for HAM radios decide to open a small design and repair shop in a mother's basement with $20 bucks for business cards.
To attend the annual Dayton "Hamfest," Lee and Andy repaired record players, clock radios, and other small electronics to raise money to build several products, including the PADDLE Model 11A for $11.95 and the CW Transmitter Model 50 for $49.95 to sell at the show.
Matric begins designing and producing solid-state logic control systems and radio controlled multiplex systems for underground purposes.
The original building was 2500 Sq. Ft. and housed all departments. The trailer in the background contained the first SMT line but burned down in the early 80s.
Both Lee and Andy were avid private pilots so what better way to beat out the competition (there wasn't much then) by offering "same day delivery" service for the Northeastern United States.
In October of 1982, a fire broke in the production and engineering trailer. The fire resulted from a flow solder machine that had just been installed.
Matric was one of the first companies locally to install desktop computers and network them together. It inspired them to open Computer Showcase, The Learning Center, & CSOnline. A retail computer store and training facility specializing in residential and commercial systems, educational training, and industrial hardware, software, and installation.
Lee Richey, president of Matric, flew to Iraq to replace parts of a radio control system. The parts were delayed so the Iraqi government requested Lee stay until the system was operational.
An opportunity to invest $600K in acquiring the inventory and board designs of the RCA Microboard line was a major step forward in expanding capabilities.
A substantial low-interest business loan was obtained to purchase new Surface Mount Technology or (SMT) equipment enabled Matric to become a world-class provider of THT and SMT assembly, engineering, and aftermarket services.
At the end of the 80s, Andy's interests turned to his favorite pastime, flying. He soon after retiring founded Maitland Flight Opportunities (MFO, Inc.), opening several pilot shops throughout the region's airports and flight training for all ages.
Lee and his wife Jane kept Computer Showcase, CSOnline, and the Learning Center and opened Radio Adventures Company, a Christian-based station in Seneca, PA.
